Dooars

Dooars and Terai are further tea districts in the Himalaya region which are both situated south of Darjeeling but not on a very high altitude. Just like in the lower regions of Darjeeling, the tea cultivated here is mainly the Thea Assamica. These produce a high yield, but lower quality tea. The opposite is true for the more robust Thea Sinensis which is cultivated in the highland of Darjeeling and whose yields are lower but whose quality is exceptional.

Some of the gardens in Dooars and Terai have now been producing a first flush for several years which is done similarly to the Darjeeling first flush. These teas taste similar to the Darjeeling, have a light cup, smell as light and fresh, but are stonger and spicier in taste; one speaks of "honey flavour".

They often achieve high prices, but only because they are plucked before the Darjeeling first flush and prices fall sharply as soon as the Darjeeling season commences. The rest of the season roughly equals that of Darjeeling, however, the qualities are not comparable to those of the highland teas. Tea from lower regions in Darjeeling can, however, very well be compared to those of Dooars and Terai.
