Pu-Erh

The tea trees which are used for the Pu-Erh tea production grow to a height of 5-10 metres and on an altitude of 1,000 to 2,000 metres wild. Its name comes from a city of the same name which is situated in South-Yunnan.

Tea has been processed and traded in Pu-Erh for a long time. The Quingmao tree is a variety of the camelia sinensis. Pu-Erh is produced as half-fermented tea and differs from the Oolong teas due to its post-fermentation. During this slow process, the leaves are injected with special microorganisms and fungi.

These form, like cheese, depending on the age, a small mould during the slow fermentation. Many experts find the Pu-Erh with a slightly visible mould as the best and most effective from a medical perspective.

Following the old Sung-Dynasty tradition, Pu-Erh is still today pressed into differend forms (tea tiles, tea discs, tea nests, tea in bamboo stems, etc). THe famous Tuocha counted as a means of payment on the Silk Road in ancient times, as did the Bing-Cha (tea disc).
